Day 13-- Seattle, WA to Port Angeles (Olympic National Park), WA

Today, I traveled the short distance between Seattle and Port Angeles, one of the main gateway towns to Olympic National Park. After waking up very early (30 minutes before my very early alarm), I headed out to do a little bit of sightseeing in Seattle by going to the Space Needle Observation Deck and the Chihuly Gardens (which are adjacent to each other and offer a special combination ticket price). I walked from my hostel and arrived at the Space Needle shortly before its 8:00am opening time. There were few people and it was clear outside, perfect conditions to enjoy the views.

After enjoying the views from the Space Needle for about 30 minutes, I headed next door to the Chihuly Gardens. I found much of the work there fascinating and beautiful. Here are some highlights:

After seeing the Chihuly exhibition, I headed out of Seattle towards Olympic National Park. Once hitting Port Angeles, I stopped at Walmart to get lunch at the in-store Subway and to pick up various supplies for the next several days. Then, it was onto the park.

I first stopped at Hurricane Ridge. At the main viewpoint, it was too hazy to see a whole lot.

I then headed to the Elwha Valley area, which was very pretty.

I then saw Crescent Lake, which is the setting of the main park lodge.

I then went to the Sol Duc Hot Springs, whcih were more expensive, less scenic, and had a more sulfurous smell than the hot springs at Banff but were still refreshing. I missed the Hoh Rain Forest (would have added 4-5 hours to my long day).

Tomorrow, it's on to the Columbia River Gorge area with a stop at Mount Rainier National Park.

Next Stop: Cascade Locks, OR
