Day 16--Klamath Falls, OR to Lassen Volcanic National Park, CA

Yesterday was Day 16 of my journey and I traveled from Klamath Falls, OR to Lassen Volcanic National Park in northern California, which was a relatively short drive (3.5 hours or so). Given the short drive and that I would have plenty of time in the park since I was camping, I afforded myself a somewhat later start (9:15am). On my way out of Klamath Falls, I stopped at a supermarket to pick up two sandwiches: one for lunch and one for dinner as well as some other things since there are limited food options in the park.

I got into the park around 1:00pm. After eating one of my sandwiches (both would have been better with sufficient heating--my heating my dinner sandwich over the campfire helped but was not that effective), I walked the 1.8 mile Manzanita Lake trail, which circles Manzanita Lake (which was the general area of my campsite for the evening, although my campsite did not have lake views).

After walking around Manzanita Lake, I proceeded to do an Auto Tour of the park (which lasted 3.5 hours or so, including a stop to see a short, not-that-great movie at the Visitors Center). While Bumpass Hell seemed very cool, I did not have the time/energy to  do the 3.5 mile hike. If I had more time, I might have planned some longer hikes.

I arrived at my campsite a little after 6:00pm. After setting up my tent, I started to set-up my campfire by going to the camp store and buying a bundle of firewood and attempting to locate kindling. However, my campfire was not very successful (the logs I purchased did not really ignite) but I was able to heat my sandwich a bit and roast a couple of marshmallows. I did, however. have a citronella candle (purchased due to the lessons I learned with insects at Badlands and Yellowstone although it was much less buggy at Lassen) which I lit while I read on my iPad in my folding rocking chair for around an hour before going to bed.

Next Stop: South Lake Tahoe, CA
